Written by Barelas resident playwrights Raúl Garza, Leonard Madrid and Mónica Sánchez, and inspired by the history and currency, dreams and musings of one of Albuquerque's oldest neighborhoods. This trilogy has been developed with the support of Artful Life's El Puente/Barelas project and in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center and Homewise. It is the latest in a series of creative engagements with Barelas residents, including the Barelas story/playwriting workshop which took place in March 2019 at the NHCC.
Raúl Garza is a Barelas-inspired playwright who tells stories that resound with culture, identity, and sense of place. His full-length play, Fantasmaville, received the National Latino Playwriting Award. When not writing, Raul explores kundalini yoga, devours pop culture, and travels beyond his means. Leonard Madrid works as a designer, actor, playwright, and educator in Albuquerque. His plays, Tecolotito, Perla, and Aurora, have received a Kennedy Center's Award for Latino Playwrights. Other plays have received readings and performances around the nation. www.leonardmadrid.org
Mónica Sánchez has followed her bliss toward a life in the theatre and the theatre of life. She has been a professional theatre maker for the last three decades and happily resides in Barelas.
